Cared for from ocean floor to the market door.
Exceptional Greenlip, Blacklip and Roei abalone, from the heart of the Southern Australian coastline.
Amongst the rugged South Australian coastline you’ll find our Western Abalone fishery. The Eyre Peninsula region has been our home since 1982 and is well known for wild-catch seafood globally including rock lobster, bluefin tuna, king prawns and of course, premium abalone.
It’s here that we have continued to evolve and innovate, developing methods to protect our precious resource and ocean ecosystems, while still allowing us to sustainably deliver the highest quality abalone to anywhere our clients may be on the planet.
Caring For Our Catch
Our simple and effective supply-chain starts within minutes of our abalone being harvested from the ocean floor. Predominantly, our catch is shucked at sea, and thus fully-bled before entering a cold chain involving insulated bins, saltwater ice, and carefully managed logistics until their arrival at our Western Abalone facility. This process ensures the quality of our catches is maintained and underpins the strong reputation of Western Abalone products.
This exceptional quality raw material is selectively offered in various forms including;
IQF (individually quick-frozen) - natural and rumbled
Canned in brine
Pouched
Other forms of abalone products that we offer include;
Live Blacklip and Greenlip
Polished abalone shells
Western Abalone’s brand, Golden Line, derives from the gold-coloured air-line that abalone divers rely on whilst working on the ocean floor. The Golden Line brand provides you with confidence in the quality and provenance of the product.
Quality environment, quality abalone.
Abalone diving has no by-catch or environmental effects other than the removal of legal-sized abalone. In 2022, the South Australian Government recognised the benign nature of our fishing activities in allowing our boats access into a sanctuary zone of the Nuyts Archipelago Marine Park.
Our fishery is co-managed by the South Australian Government and our industry association. We have been proactive in managing the fishery to ensure sustainability, via voluntarily under-catching quotas, imposing seasonal closures and catch-caps as well as predominantly fishing well above our minimum legal length limits.
We are independently assessed annually by government scientists with the intent of ensuring sustainability via reviewing catch quotas and adjusting them if necessary.
